This month of December in Lahore has been more Decemberish than ever. Winter has made records, two degrees and four with friends and family sharing posts of how Lahore is topping the charts of ‘cold’ in cities around the world. The entire city is getting married (usual for every December) and as fairy lights ‘web and cast’ all through the landscape of abodes… all airplanes of the first world are directed here, to get married or to visit family and friends. With term end result deadlines, invigilation at work, close friends visiting or getting married, inter city funerals, flu, cough and residue of the November smog, collision and clash of events and waking up nights to settle personal and professional deadlines, the rezai (traditional fat quilt) was sometimes the only refuge and it continues as we enter into this futuristic looking numerical : 2020. I’m sitting/lying in my rezai as I write this within a soundscape of local news television headlines on the New year and Bahria town Eiffel tower 🗼 fireworks! The kitsch-ness of all this is delicious and satisfying. My mind, phone notes and journals have been consumed and absorbed in everything I want to write here on ‘is there anything that is not art?’ ….
… in the coming of times.
And for every new thought I read more.
Reading is a privilege, a fortune, a miracle and the most nurturing entertainment, it’s one of the few things that warms my mind nowadays…these days I enjoy music only when I read – during my paper checking deadlines when I took breaks, I read ! I had never done that before…it was always NETFLIX or other sources within tired academic breaks ( as I was already reading) but this new development has amused me and daunts me a bit : am I becoming too serious of a person? but then I also know well that I’m not – I never feel like an all-knowing adult when I paint and I don’t when I read – it’s always a Matilda-ish vibe of magic, wonder and infinite curiosity. In those breaks where I read on things which I’m curious about and would support my art practice and projects I was also reading on the things I intend to write on although I couldn’t post much in December. Laptop folders always become an archive treasure of PDF material in the process, along with books. I found this ‘ reading reflection’ in my notes which I believe I scribbled during those academic breaks :
Is writing art? Tell her it is not then then let her slap you for saying that. Have you read Goethe? No? Shakespeare? No. Then how can you write. Did you need training to drink milk from your mother’s breasts. How can you not read. I read. But can I decide what to read? ” Read” said the angel to the Prophet. Read so that all heaven breaks loose. No one has an explanation for ‘alif – laam – meem’ “READ” AS FAITH IS IN THE READING “
I begin my new year in the hope of Reading. Reading hearts, cities, pages and dreams. This post can be a list of things that ‘I want to – have to’ write on and all that I’m ‘reading’ for it but it’s a simple wish. Happy New Year. Hope we the people of the world, can read eachother better, for a better, glorious world.
p.s : Papa I wish you could’ve seen 2020 with us ❤ your study still relishes all that you read…
